Yesterday Sfakera made the trip to Town to play Neo Olympous who won comfortably 5-0 to stay top of the league. Sfakera remain 5th but are 5 points behind the 4th placed team.
I was unable to attend the game.
This Saturday sees the village Cup Final which is being played at the Corfu stadium next to the airport. There are no league games as Sunday is Greek Independence Day.

Yesterday at midday Sfakera made the short trip to Karousades to play 4th placed Velos. They lost 2-0 and drop to 6th in the league, just 2 points behind 5th but 2 points above 9th.
I didn't attend as it clashed with Palm Sunday services and the procession in Town.

Yesterday on a humid but sunny afternoon Sfakera hosted Wolves. Nikos back from Army, Leddi be late due to work. Sfakera were making effort to stop the comments that have been leading to far too many yellow and red cards, instructions to sub any players who show dissent!
In a one sided first half Sfakera dictated the play, scrappy at times. Several shots wide or blocked early. From a corner in the 7th minute the ball found its way to Yiannis the midfielder who shot home for 1-0. Just three minutes later a flowing move by Alex, Pano released Yiannis the striker one on one who scored, 2-0. Strangely the linesman flag goal kick! A delay while referee checked the netting before confirming the goal. On 13 Woles had a freekick on the D middle of box, deflection off wall, Costas tip for corner that he cleared with punch. In 21st minute a goal bound shot by Sfakera no 9 was deflected over for a corner. Then in the 28th minute Wolves scored a surprise goal, lobbed into the box it was headed, Costas slow to react, or maybe think going wide, watched as the ball hit the post and went in, 2-1. Just a few minutes later a long clearance by Sfakera, the ball beat the defender and Yiannis the striker cooly scored 3-1. In the 35th minute Sfakera win the ball in midfield pass to Pano who put Yiannis in to score and claim at hat-trick 4-1. Wolves had a couple shots well wide as the half came to an end.
Sfakera subbed the no 9 and Alex at half time bringing on Leddi and Nikos. A great chance was created by Leddi but Rizzo missed his shot. Two minutes later and Yiannis somehow shot over from 4 metres. On 53 minutes a pas overhit but a defender concede a corner when the goalie could have gathered. From the corner Yiannis the midfielder scored with a header 5-1. Spiros came on for Rizzo, in 58th he crossed, Leddi shot saved for corner, from which a shot was cleared off the line. Another Sfakera substitution but the game got scraopy, Sfakeea players walk back from failed attacks, massive space in midfield for Wolves to exploit. Chances missed at both ends, in 80th Wolves winger through and scored with cross shot, 5-2. Referee then blew for time, 10 minutes early!

Good luck to the lads in the football team as they play that important game in Kontokoli this afternoon. Saw Jon last night as he was heading off to a darts presentation for the end of season, hopefully mindful of that important match today. But not much chance!.

Well on a lovely sunny afternoon with a light wind a depleated Sfakera team, due to work commitments lost 3-1 against Aphras.
In the 1st half Sfakera never really created great chances to trouble the goalkeeper, a few shots were mostly off target. Aphras scored 2 goals both direct from free kicks. The 1st in the 31st minute was curled over the wall from 30metres, the 2nd from 23 metres round the wall into the corner past an unsighted Costas.
Both teams made half time substitutions. Sfakera had a great chance to pull a goal back in the 48th but Yiannis shot was just wide. In the 64th minute the ball broke loose from a midfield challenge and a speculative shot by Aphras from 30 metres found the top corner for a 3-0lead. Just a minute later the Aphras no 18 stupidly shoved Sfaker no 7 in the back forcing him into 2 other Aphras players. This resulted in a melee involving all players and even substitutes. The referee consulted his linemen and surprisingly only booked 2 players the 18 and Sfakera 7. He also sent of Yiannis the Sfakera midfielder who had thrown a punch giving a player a nose bleed - clearly he ignored fact that that player had also thrown punches as had several others. To their credit after the 7 minute delay Sfakera settled better despite the loss of a player and immediately Yiannis had a shot saved. Just a minute later Pano passed to Yiannis whose cross shot found the goal, 3-1. He nearly scored another in the 80th, his shot being tipped away for a corner. In the 85th Pano fired a long free kick inches over. In the first minute of added time (only 5 of what should have been at least 8 minutes were added) the referee sent off the Sfakera official from the bench for something he said, Takis also walked off in protest. The match petered out ending early.
The league table shows Sfakera still 6th, above Aphras who are on same points and 1 point above 8th. Only 2 points behind 5th. But apparently we cannot now make the play offs. There is one game to play at home next weekend.
Attendance was just 15, recent crowds are low showing the return to work of many who go to watch the games. There had only been 19 at the previous weeks home game.

Yesterday with the temperature 31c at the 4.30 ko in Nymphes the final game of the season resulted ìn a weak Sfakera team, due to work, suspension and injury winning 2-1 to finish 6th.
A very scrappy game, play not flowing hut continually breaking down with missed passes, tackles as keep ball rather than pass, and wayward shots usually from too far out. The visiting goalkeeper was also good in the air catching most crosses and corners. A drink break was called after 28 minutes due to the heat. Shortly after Alex, on his birthday, fed Yiannis who beat 2 players and shot, the goalkeeper tipped it over for a corner. On 35 minutes Alex again fed Yiannis who cut the ball back from the bye line and Lee calmly slotted the goal, 1-0. Shortly after Lee succumbed to an injury picked up earlier in the half and was subbed. A great chance in the 41st was squandered by the striker after Yiannis squared the ball to him. In the 43rd Sfakera lost the ball in midfield, the visitors broke 3 v 1 and a toepoke past Costas levelled the score. HT 1-1
The second half started similar to the first with the wasteful Yiannis again firing wide. In the 53rd Stathis tackled near back post but didnt realise ball near his feet and it rolled to the goalkeeper. From a corner in the 56th Pano almost scored with an ovethead kick but the goalkeeper saved. The visitors had a few breaks but there shooting was as wasteful as Sfakera. After several shots wide by Yiannis who had freedom of left side, and Nikos Sfakera regained the lead. Again Yiannis down left, cross into box where a superbly controlled volley by Pano beat the keeper before he could move. In the 72nd, Jonathan was substituted. The visitors had a free kick just outside box in 76th, the ball wacked into Pano in the wall, the rebound easily gathered by Costas, Pano needed time to regain his breath. The game petered out with more shots by both teams either wide or tamely to goalkeeper, the visitors no 9 being caught offside (for the 7th time!) When they had a final chance to get a draw in the last minute.
FT 2-1 Finish 6th in league, just outside playoffs.

Today I made my first visit of the season to watch Sfakera. A lovely sunny day for my stroll to Nymphes, some cloud around but only a hint of breeze. a crowd of 35 gathered to see the game against Dragotina from the south. Sfakera a much changed team from last season with much younger players and a new goalkeeper. The goalkeeper, Jonathan Banos, Alex Lagos, Costas and Christos (I think) were the experienced players. due to kick off at 11.30 it in fact started at 11.23am. Sfakera in a new kit of royal blue shirts with a white chevron on the chest, black shorts and white socks.
the visitors had the better of the early exchanges, blazing a shot high over the goal after just 2 minutes and later getting caught offside. The young Sfakera team seemed to lack shape and up front they lacked both pace and ball control. But they didn't lack in enthusiasm. in the 17th Sfakera had a deep free kick but floated into the box it was headed clear. A half chance presented itself shortly after when a cross into the box found young Nickos unmarked but he missed the ball and the goalkeeper gathered. Sfakera's next effort was well wide from 22 metres. Some good play from the back and a nice through ball from midfield for Sfakera but the forwards were too slow and the goalkeeper got to the ball first. A chance for the visitors as the half hour approached but the header from a free kick was just wide of the back post. Sfakera had a chance on 34 minutes but the shot was too high - after this attack I hear Alex telling Jonathan not to surge forward in open play as he is needed at the back to cover for the kids. as the half came towards its end Sfakera grew in confidence, a nice move and cross from the left, just too high for the forwards; a shot screwed well wide; a good move down left resulting in a corner, headed clear but Sfakera fired in a shot that was easily saved. HT came after just 44 minutes!! 0-0
the second half started 3 minutes early, clearly catching some players out. After an early free kick to Sfakera was headed clear, Jonathan had to leave the pitch to get his shinpads, a bit later Nikos also left the pitch briefly. the visitors made a substitution after 50 minutes. sfakera made a break on 53 minutes but nobody challenged when the cross came in. The next minute a Sfakera free kick from 25 metres was punched clear by the goalkeeper; shortly after he saved another tame shot; then a follow up was fired wide. Sfakera were getting on top of the game. In the 57th a free kick on the right touchline was put into the heart of the penalty area but the goalkeeper made a fine catch. A rare counter by the visitors found them offside. in the 64th minute a nice move through the midfield resulted in a Sfakera shot going wide; two minutes later the goalkeeper tipped a shot for a corner. before it was taken Sfakera made 2 substitutions bringing on two experienced players in place of the experienced Jonathan and Costas. the substitute Costas (or is it Nikos from Yummies) took the corner, low to near post, where somehow Tassos turned and shot from a very tight angle and the ball squeezed into the net at the back post, 1-0 to Sfakera. The visitors immediately made another substitution. in the 71st Sfakera broke from midfield but a 20 metre shot was fired wide. next minute a deep cross was met by Nikos on the volley but his effort went wide. The visitors then had a chance but shot well over the bar. Sfakera countered and got a corner, headed out, crossed back in, headed out and young Pano fired a good shot from 20 metres that the goalkeeper saved. The visitors should have equalised in the 77th minute, they broke quickly had 3 against 1 defender but the player on the ball lost control and when pass his team mate was offside.....a lucky escape. sfakera still pushed forward getting a corner, inswinging towards back of goal but just a bit too long. A great chance for Sfakera to double their advantage was wasted when the forwards shot was tamely rolled to the goalkeeper. Next minute the visitors again broke catching Sfakera with too many players out of position, Pano hauled the forward to the ground to concede a free kick and pick up a yellow card. The resulting free kick was fired into the wall. In the 83rd minute the visitors had a corner, taken short but let slip out for a goal kick. Surprisingly with the result still in the balance the referee, who never ran or even jogged once all game!!, blew for full time after just 40 minutes play.
Full Time, Sfakera win 1-0.
