Excuse me chaps, this thread is about local footballso can we keep it to that. If necessary start a new thread elsewhere. Thank you.
The Sfakera game Wednesday will now be played in Acharavi due to Nymphes playing a cup semi final the same time.

We’ll leave you to guess who the guests are John - one is from Tyne & Wear and the other from south London - so you’re in the clear on this one!
Totally agree with Dave’s comments about football ... starting a new thread is fairly straightforward.

I am most certainly NOT from Tyne & Wear or South London - but at least the person with the question now knows Pete's whereabouts

Just a quick update, Sfakera's game has now been switched to Thursday afternoon at 3.15pm in Nymphes, apparently they asked the league as they didn't wish to lose home advantage.

Yesterday afternoon Nymphes played Kerkyra U20 in the 1st leg of the semi final of the cup. A fast paced game saw a great counter attack by Kerkyra in the 6th minute and the cross should have been tapped into the open goal but somehow the striker put it wide. Nymphes matched the youngsters energy and at times showed more composure but relied too much on long balls from the back. In the 20th minute a half cleared cross fell nicely too a Nymphes player on the edge of the box and his well placed shot put the home side 1 up. There were 2 further great chances for Kerkyra in the 1st half, one shot over and the other saw a diving keeper make a wonderful save with his trailing leg. The 2nd half continued at great pace even though the game was crying out for somebody to put their foot on the ball. Nymphes closed their opponents down quickly, repeatedly fouled the speedy number 11 who was their main threat. At the other end the Nymphes number 7 was getting the better of the full back but his crosses or pull backs resulted in blocks, simple saves or off target shots. About half hour into the half he again roasted the defender to be clear on goal and scored with a well placed shot into the corner. Later he again was through but his shot was well saved at the near post by the keeper. A noisy crowd of about 300, with fog horns and firecrackers ensured a great atmosphere and a rousing applause at the final whistle as Nymphes take a 2-0 lead into the 2nd leg and they went home dreaming of a place in the final.

Yesterday on a lovely sunny afternoon but shade with cool breeze off the hill behind the stand a crowd of 42 enjoyed a quiet game with a crazy last 5 minutes as Sfakera beat Ag Nicholas 2-1 at Nymphes.
The first half very even with few chances, the best falling to the visitors at the back post but the striker was unable to turn the ball into goal and it went a foot wide. Jonathan Banos coped very well with a center forward who dwarfed him and was twice the bulk, as you would expect the visitors played high balls to him at every opportunity. HT 0-0.
The second half started in similar vein until the 63rd minute when a wonderful flowing move from right back via midfield, where Antonis (Alexandros) threaded a well timed 45 yard through ball to the left winger who on getting to the bye line crossed for Messina to have a 12 yard side foot to open the scoring. Not long after another glorious opportunity for Sfakera, this time Messina crossed from the right corner only for the young center forward to balloon his shot high over from 6 yards when a goal looked certain. The visitors continued with the high balls into the box but the defence held firm with just one shakey moment when young Nikos in goal came out of box but the forward got to the ball first only to roll his shot wide.
With 5 minutes left a great crossfield ball from near the left touchline 10 yards in the defensive half by Costas had Messina alone chasing the ball, the lineswoman waving play on as the last defender was on the opposite flank, the goalie came out but a lovely lob saw the ball land on the goal line and bounce high into the roof of the net, 2-0. The visiting players surroundedthe referee to protest offside, he consulted the lineswoman and the goal stood. They went loopy in their protests and while referee was writing a name in his book, behind him 3 players were in the lineswomans face harrassing her. No further bookings but there should have been including a 2nd yellow for the captain who at 6 foot 7 should have known better than to try and intimidate the lineswoman, shameful. Having lost control the referee finally restarted the game, off the ball a visiting player put a forarm into Antonis back and while play was in the other half he angrily squared up to him before being dragged away by Messina. The referee to his shame never even saw the incident, he then went to book a visiting player for a late tackle only to raise his notebook above his head rather than the yellow card, which followed once he realised! Next as time was running out a ball into Sfakera's penalty area saw a line of 4 visitors offside and the ball shot into the net, the linesman didn't flag, the well placed referee not overrule. The visitors the jumped on the Sfakera goalie as he was picking the ball up to try and get it back for a quick restart, but the Sfakera players rushed to his defence and a melee ensued. One visiting player reeled away screaming and fell facing the linesman as if he'd been in a boxing match, holding his face, great acting after what was a push. He didnt fool the officials. The game restarted and the final minute played out. FT 2-1 to Sfakera. Lots of arguments continue after the final whistle with the officials remaining on the pitch until all players were in their dressing rooms. A cazy end to the match.

After last nights storm i arrived at the pitch in Immerola just outside Kassioppi, by the main coast road on the headland near the fish farm to spots rain for the 11.30 kick off. Sfakera started brightly against Wolves who are at or next to bottom of the league, with the centre forward hitting the post in the 3rd minute. Then in the 6th minute a great through ball found Alexis galloping through alone and easily beating the keeper to put Sfakera 1 up. Keeping control the score was doubled on 18 minutes when Messina set up the centre forward with a cross to the right side near post. Alexis switched from right midfield, where he had been very busy on wing, to more usual fullback position only to underhit a back pass which allowed Wolves to pull a goal back in the 24th minute. It then started to rain lightly and some spectators retreated to their cars to watch as there is no cover at the ground. The hardier of the 30 or so watching braved it out and saw Sfakera go 3-1 up in the 35th minute, a flowing move from left defence via midfield to right wing when Alexis cross to an unmarked striker at the back post was turned into the goal by a defender. HT 1-3 to Sfakera.
The second half started with Sfakera on the attack, a cross headed out to the young No 8 whose lobbed deflected shot went in the top corner in only the 47th minute. Just a couple of minutes later another 30 yard shot was tipped over for a corner. As an Amek Lines ferry sailed past on its way into Corfu so a through ball found Messina onside to plant a shot from 20 yards into the corner of the goal, 5-1 after 52 minutes. Around the hour mark a frustrated Wolves player was booked for dissent, then almost immediately dived into a challenge from behind, reckless. He didn't wait for the 2nd yellow to be shown, took off his shirt and walked off moaning. The game slowed after several substitutions and with the result inevitable but Sfakera continued to attack, but they were caught offside, attempts saved, shots miss hit until the 79th minute when Messina beat the offside to lob the goalie for Sfakera's 6th and final goal. A few breakaways by Wolves came to nothing during the half with no threat of a goal. Strangely the game had only entered the 86th minute when the referee blew for time, there were no complaints from either team.
An enjoyable game in a lovely setting even on a wet, cloudy day and home in time for dinner.
