The season starts this weekend with Sfakera away to Vitalades in the far South. I an unable to attend but the result will appear here. This is a difficult fixture early in the season as so many are still working and it is a long day with the travel, need to be there hour before game etc and some cannot get the time off.

Sfakera are at home this weekend. The game is at the pitch in Nymphes on Saturday with a scheduled 4:30pm ko. Always be there half hour early as things can change!! No charge......often refreshment cabin is closed so bring your own. There is covered seating for those not been before so all be good if it rains. Forecast looks ok.
For those who prefer to watch Nymphes they are also at home; Sunday at 4:30pm. They look for a payment if you go by car and park at the ground and a donation if you walk up. Refreshment cabin is usually open when Nymphes play.

signal not good; third time of try post...…!Ηρακλής Σφακερών-Ατρόμητος Άφρας 0-4
So this season we have Jonathan Banos as President...……...he could play but a logstanding knee injury means he has hung up his boots. There is a new Manager and Coach and several new players. All takes time to bed in as can be reflected in todays score. It was a very poor performance; I will give a few reasons why by it is 2 games into season so lets hope the new regime can turn things around.
KO was late at 4:38; sunny with 37 plus 2 babies in attendance. Visitors won toss so Sfakera defend with sun in faces. Scrappy start with Visitors in ascendancy but always offside. In 7th Sfakera get a corner following a poor back pass; was cleared to e throw. From that Sfakera engineer a half chance but Rizzo had a shot blocked. Visitors again caught offside......break too quick...…..then have a shot well over. the sky start to cloud over taking away the visitors advantage......but they still attack. A cross which Nikos in goal try to punch clear...…...poor attempt and ball in air so he try catch and is fouled in process. In th e24th visitors break; Sfakera defender gets in a back pass s think all ok but Nikos in goal totally miskick a pass to defender and th striker left with a tap into open goal.....o-1. Big error. Again in 28th another big error at back for Sfakera; they should score but Nikos pulls off a good save; twice follow up shots blocked before ball cleared....a lucky escape. The problem is clear; Nikos cannot do goal kicks; last season a defender did for him; this season with new rules they play short and try to play out and upfield. This requires accurate passing; players running into space especially in midfield or up front......Sfakera were not doing this and passes to midfield were intercepted so they were always under pressure. IN 30th another error led to a goal for the visitors.....given as offside but a warning. A minute later Sfakera play a ball to center forward; he had to try swiffle and shoot but missed the ball and in went out for a goal kick. In the 32nd the visitors were ruled offside ; a very close decision which I think was wrong as a defender was hanging back. Any way the next minute it is 0-2....visitors cross the centre forward miss as did goalkeeper and ball to right where a player has a free shot at goal and scores. Problem is no outlet; passes not accurate enough or long enough....doesn't seem to be a midfield wanting the ball. Last season finished with a good passing game but the same is not there in this game. In th e34th Nikos had a long shot that went wide. Next minute th eSfakera centre forward was bowled over......no mean feat as the offender was half the size! The free kick was played into the box and cleared. In the 40th the visitors work the ball into the box; striker goes down under a challenge and appeals for a penalty; ref gives a goal kick. I think ref was correct in this case. In the 44th the visitors again break; are 3 v 2 but a pass out wide was over hit and it was a throw to Sfakera. HT 0-2.
No shots on target and just 2 off target in the half.
Second half; 3 substitutes for Sfakera. Visitors kick off; score in about 6 seconds!!!!!!! No Sakera player touch the ball. KO play back; big kick upfield; ball ounce and on running player heads over outrunning goalkeeper into goal 0-3. Game over before subs touch the ball.! Immediately Sfakera attack; ball into box but header was cleared rather than at goal Straight away the visitors attack; they lob over the goalkeeper and the ball hits the outside of the post so a goal kick. Very similar the next minute but end up as goal kick.Sfakera had a shot shortly after but well over from edge of box. Attacking is hard; no running into channels to make efforts just react to ball rather than make run and hope ball comes. In 48 the visitors had a 40 metre shot; Nikos slow to react and had to dive and push away for corner. It was cleared. In the 53rd the visitors had a very long shot; should have been gathered easy by Nikos but he was slow to react and had to dive and push for a corner which was cleared. In the 54th visitors nearly score; a corner cleared and a challenge with a foot up; Yellow card to visitors. Shortly a shot by Sfaker;just wide; want corner but goal kick given....yellow card fo r dissent. Visitors a substitution; Sfakera a shot that was high and wide. In 58th Nikos lay off to Rizzo whose shot was straight at the goalkeeper. Sfakera another substitution follow by visitors doing same. In the 65th Sfakera have a great chance; a ball into Nikos found him between 2 defenders onto goal but the diving goalkeeper saved the shot with the follow up blasted wide. Visitors get another yellow card. Sfakera are pushing on and a Nikos shot was cleared for a throw. Next minute a Sfakera shot on the left was so mishit it went out for a throw on the right! Alex then get a good cross in; the goalkeeper punch just before Nikos get head in and fortunately for visitors the ball hit Nikos and went out for a goal kick. Two minutes later a Sfakera corner hit the top of the bar on its way out of play. In 73rd visitors another Yellow for a foul. Next minute Nikos another long range shot....went well wide. In 76th visitors break like just before when caught offside; this time onside as in own half; ball pass to wide player who shoots across goal and in off the far post 0-4. Shortly after the visitors score again but this time it was offside. It was all the visitors now and they had a shot well saved by Nikos but a rare break by Sfakera in the 84th resulted in a cross headed just wide by Nikos.
FT 0-4. after 85 minutes,
I think this was probably worst home game I have seen; poor passing; poor control and very poor movement. Bad to try to play from back. It early days of a new regime so lets hope game plan and execution gets better as season progresses. In a 14 team league sfakera; after 2 games; are 11th...….the 3 teams below have forefitted their games by not playing due to insufficient players due to work commitments.

Sfakera are at home today; kick off 12:30. I am not going to the game due to a day trip from the village to Kapodistrias Museum and Corfu Town but will post a score this evening. Weather expected to be good so if you are here on holiday why not take a trip to Nymphes to watch...…..take a jumper or jacket as the stand will be in the shade some of the time.

Oh dear another tonking…………..this time they lose 5-1. They were playing Thella (or similar name...…..they are a team based in Corfu Town who are basically a Corfu FC youth team...……….maybe U20 or U19 not really sure of their rules but they are promising young players from around the Island hoping to make the Corfu team. Not easy as Corfu now in what called Super league 2 (a joke title for teams with crowds less than 2,000 mostly - in England it is level 6 on crowds) and the oldest player in their squad is 25 and most are U23.
Its not a good start to season...……….losing all games by 3 or 4 goals doesn't build confidence. Anyways things can only get better; surely.

On Sunday an 11:30am ko at a sunny Nymphes against a youngish Sinarades side who have only played and lost once this season having forefitted earlier games. There are changes at Sfakera since I last watched; the manager has left along with his son Tom who was Captain. Nikos and Rizzo are looking to leave for other teams as well. On the plus side 18 turned up for training midweek. Safkera had Jonathan back playing and Spiros Martinos (Alexandros) along side him in central defence. The team looked more balanced. KO delayed awaiting on the Dr.
KO 11:40. 2minutes Visitors a free kick on edge box to left; the shot was blocked and cleared. Sfakera's first attack of note was in the 10th, the cross was misshit and landed on top of net but goalkeeper had it covered. In the 11th after box ping pong Sfakera shoot wide. A defender was injured when feet up and Alex caught him but injury more from his landing than any contact. In the 15th Lee in good position but his shot was weak and deflected to goalkeeper. Two minutes later good midfield play resulted in another shotbut it was straight at the goalkeeper. Next minute a free kick into box; ball fell to Sfakera centre forward who shot on the turn; well saved by the goalkeeper. In the 20th the visitors attacked but a 25metre shot was high and wide. In the 23rd they attack on right wing; winger trys a lob but it so high it goes over fence behind the goal. 25th a sfakera corner; the ball hit an attacker but rolled out for a goal kick; two minutes later a shot from left centre 24 metres out was straight at the keeper. Another corner on 30th the ball hit a defender on the knee and went to the keeper. In 32nd Nikos in the Sfakera goal was forced to make a diving save from a long shot but he gathered it easily. A good break by Sfakera in the 35th but the final touch too hard and the keeper gather at the strikers feet. In the 37th there was a clash in midfield as Alex and a midfielder crash into each other going for the loose ball; the Sinarades player came off worse and had over 3 minutes treatment and took no further part in the first half. Sfakera now v 10 men and attacked; in 41st Lee was in a great position but his shot went just wide. Next minute another glourious chance; centre forward spins and shoots; should score but again it went wide. Next minute the referee stopped play for a foul; booked a Sinarades player; but he should have played on as Sfakera were 3 v 2!!!. The free kick into box resulted in a touch by Yiannis but the goalkeeper gathered. In 44th Lee plays a clever flick over defence but midfielder just failed to make contact. In 45th Sinarades cross into box and a striker clashes with Nikos in goal; he lands on face and a further 3 minutes treatment. Once he fit to continue Ref blows for half time ignoring the 6 minutes injury time !!!! Shame as v 10 men Sfakera looked like scoring. HT 0-0.
2nd half; the injured player back on and Nikos in goal ok. Visitors start with a substitution. In 47th they had a chance; it took Nikos 3 attempts to catch the ball and under a challenge he again needed treatment before he could continue. This time his nose was plastered following a nose bleed. 52nd a Sfakera corner.....it was overhit and cleared. 53rd ball into box; Jonathan miss a touch at back post; ball after part cleared falls to Sfakera centre forward who turns and hits a great shot; somehow the goalkeepers leap managed to result in him tipping the ball for a corner; great save. The corner to the back saw Jonathan head back into goal area; Yiannis take a knock going for the ball which was cleared for a throw. 1 minute injury treatment. In the 57th the visitors break fast and a long shot wacked against the crossbar with Nikos well beaten; Sfakera countered but when in a good position were called offside. In 62nd a deep visitors free kick was half cleared as Jonathan lost the ball in the sun; fortunately the resulting show was high over. In 65th a foul throw by Sfakera; visitors take throw; the defender not enough on his attempted clearance and they score. 0-1. In 68th a Sfakera throw on the right, ball into penalty area and a shot on turn beats the keeper at the near post; 1-1. In the 75th a dangerous attack by visitors; 3 v 1......Jonathan trys a tackle but doesn't make it; Nikos dives and makes a fine save to concede a corner which was cleared. In 79th there was a foul 20 metres out; visiting player gets a Yellow Card; free kick by Aggelos was blocked. In 81st a defensive clearance hit Lee; he pass to centre forward who should have scored but it went wide. In 82nd Lee was substituted. In 86th a defender miss the ball giving the visitors a chance but Nikos saved and gathered the loose ball. In 87th a Sfakera corner was headed wide by the centre forward. The following minute a header in midfield put the Sfakera centre forward 1 v 1; he should have scored but his shot wasn't lifted and the goal keeper was able to get fingers on it to save; a great chance to win the game was missed. In 89th Sfakera again into box on a loose ball; Spiros spin on ball rather than try a shot and pass back to on rushing player but the chance was lost and the ball cleared. In the 90th Sfakera break and the centre forward is onside but 45 metres from goal; not enough pace to run in so try a lob but it was well wide. In 92nd a Sfakera corner; everybody miss it and it went out for a goal kick on the far side. FT 1-1.
A game Sfakera should really have won; yes visitors hit bar but Sfakera had three great chances and failed to take them all. Stay 11th in league.
Sfakera 7 shots on target; 10 off target.

Frees the weekend up...……...Saturday....Rugby World Cup Final at Drunken Sailor (bacon or sausage butties will be on sale). Sunday is a Procession of St Spiriodon around Town to celebrate the miracle of the end of the 2nd plague.

Yesterday Sfakera played at home in Nymphes against Spartilas in front of 59 hardy souls. A heavy shower an hour before kick off had passed and there was some sun but a chill damp wind rolled down from the hills throughout the game. Sfakera had no Jonathan Banos not the usual centre forward and in fact had little height in the team. Lee was the lone striker. Most of the crowd were supporters of the visitors; they had 2 banners up......one in English saying "Welcome Refugees". The reason for this who knows; its not as if the game is on TV!! They were also in good voice, singing in the second half.
KO at 3:15 and the visitors had the first shot which Nikos just catch with a striker looming. Sfakera did likewise a minute later but the shot was straight at the keeper. In the 13th the visitors again tried a long shot from a 30 metre free kick but it was well over the bar. Two minutes later another Sfakera shot was straight at the keeper. In the 20th Sfakera had a shot that went wide. A nice move and cross by Sfakera; the ball was headed back into the centre but there was nobody there and it was cleared poorly. Lee tried a lob shot which was caught by the keeper. In the 25th the visitors broke forward, there were 2 unmarked players in the centre, the cross missed the first of them but the second rolled the ball into the empty net. 0-1. The visitors were now on top and had a free kick out wide; it was overhit and went out for a goal kick. In the 30th a shot forced Nikos into a good diving save. Shortly after another deep free kick was cleared for a throw; a long wind assisted throw but there was a foul so Sfakera were able to clear. A visitors corner in the 35th was scrambled clear. SFakera had a 32 metre free kick which the goal keeper managed to catch at the second attempt. SFakera escaped in the 39th minute when a long ball into box caused panic; Nikos call for it but try to punch instead of catch and he missed the punch with the ball falling to a striker whose shot went just wide.
HT 0-1 and it was getting dark.
The second half began with two successive corners for the visitors. From the second Sfakera broke away but were caught offside. In the 51st Alex tried a long shot that went high over. Sfakera were now in the ascendancy attacking down the right, a good cross was caught by the keeper after the ball had bounced. Shortly after a shot from the right was high over. The visitors had another chance in the 60th minut; the shot was parried by Nikos when it looked easier for him to catch; maybe the wind was affecting him. In the 61st Sfakera had a free kick 33 metres out on the left. The ball is the keepers to get with players running in; the keeper failed to gather and the loose ball was shot into the goal for the equaliser. 1-1. In the 64th Sfakera attack and try to round the keeper but the shot was wide; next minute a deep free kick into the box was partly headed clear; the long follow up shot was well wide. In the 68th minute a free kick to visitors 55 metres from goal, it was overhit. Nikos didn't come to catch but let it bounce. It did rather high and he had to tip it over the bar......somehow the referee gave a goal kick. The referees problems continued in a farcical way that was to change the game in the 70th minute. Sfakera attack into the box; a shot and the defender uses his arm to try and stop the ball but Sfakera stab it into the net. The referee decides to disallow the goal to give a penalty.....why? Sfakera had scored so there was no need!! The only reason for his action should have been because he wanted to send off the offender for deliberate hand ball but no; he didn't even show a Yellow card. Yainnis took the kick and the keeper saved to his left; the linesman flag he was off his line. It was retaken and Yainnis shot over. So the referees blunders and poor penalty taking denied Sfakera a lead. This gave the visitors a boost and seemed to affect Sfakera as well. In the 77th an error in clearing the ball gave the visitors a free shot but it was straight at Nikos. Two minutes later they break centrally and shoot; Nikos could only payy the shot rather tham gather the ball and it rebound to a striker who easily scored. 1-2. Sfakera tried to attack but from a corner they headed well over and in the 86th a nice break on the right resulted in a good cross; the goalkeeper could only parry but there was no body there to take advantage. From the throw in ALex tried a long shot but it was well wide. The goalkeeper went down as if injured and needed treatment; was he just running down time? Sfakera were caught offside in their next attack. In the last minute the visitors had a free kick. Again Nikos didn't come and catch but let the ball bounce and had to tip it over. This time the referee gave the corner which wasn't cleared and in the melee it ended in the net; possibly an own goal. 1-3. Full Time.
Sfakera had 7 shots on target and 7 off target. They are now 12th in the league...……...the only teams below are the two who have yet to field a team and been forefitting matches!!

Κεραυνός Δραγωτινών-Ηρακλής Σφακερών 1-0
Yesterday was Dragotina v Sfakera in an 11:30 ko in Lefkimmi. I was on the bus at 9am for the trip south surprised to find it sunny down there but a strong wind blowing the length of the pitch......a new pitch laid for this season so a bit hard but good none the same. I was glad it was sunny as there is little by way of covered viewing but with a crowd of just 18 at maximum I could have coped in the press area or under the cover by the referees changing. There was a minutes silence before ko which was well respected.
We got there at 10:50 so the ko was delayed 10 minutes. Sfakera played into the wind and to be fair played a good first half in trying to keep the ball on the ground and play a passing game. The first chance came in the 4th minute for the home team following a quick counter; they found themselves 2 v 1 but were caught offside. In the 6th minute Sfakera should have taken the lead; a good move Martinos into box, square to Lee who turns and shoots (not that powerfully as he thought he could sidefoot it home) on ly for a defender to clear it 2 yards from the goal. In the 11th another good move found Lee to the left of the box but his shot was well saved for a corner. Jonathan got his head onto the corner but the ball was cleared and play stopped as a Sfakera player was injured in the box. In the 14th Sfakera had a free kick on the right touch line; ball into box cleared, a long shot hit the post and was cleared. ANother shot by Lee in the 17th following a partially cleared corner was blocked. The home team were struggling with the wind behind them as it was a bit strong; long balls carried on the wind; passes hit too hard ran away. A shot by them in the 19th from outside the box drifted wide. Again the home team attacked but a 21st minute shot was easily saved. In the 23rd Sfakera are in attack with a free kick on the left. Pano is in the box and tries a lob that was saved. The home team counter and Nikos in the Sfakera goal runs out to get the ball before the attacker; his pass was poor and gave the ball away but the shot went wide. In the 27th there was a bad referee decision against Sfakera; Lee was tackled on the left side the defender was on the ground; Lee won the ball but the referee gave the home team a free kick. It was a bad decision but Lee was lucky not to be cautioned for his dissent....the ref just indicated zip it!! In the 30th Sfakera had another cnace following a free kick on the right but the final shot was wide.. In the 35th Sfakera broke through the centre but the shot was blocked for a corner; it was overhit and part cleared, there resulted in a long shot at goal that was wide. The best move of the game by Sfakera was in the 41st, Aggelos, Pano and Alex: after a step over by Lee; ball played through for Lee but went out for a goal kick...……….it seemed Lee had expected Alex to have a shot at goal and wasn't expecting the return pass!!! Ref blew for HT after just 43 minutes. 0-0
In the 48th the home team had a shot, probably going wide but Nikos saved anyway. A good ball into the box in the 54th but a defender easily shielded to the goalkeeper as nobody was attacking the ball. It seemed Sfakera didn't want to play same passing game this half......too much ball in the air or overhit passes both of which were no good with a strong wind behind them!. In the 57th the home side took the lead against the run of play following a terrible error. Yiannis was back to take a shot goal kick from Nikos; instead of roll the ball out to the full back he tried to hit it hard......the ball just crashed into the nearest attacker and dropped at his feet; he rolled it left and the other striker easily placed the ball wide of Nikos.....1-0. The home tam had another good chance in the 61st but Nikos made a good save. In the 62nd the home team also messed up a short goal kick but Pano couldn't quite capitalise and the goal keeper recovered the ball. Lee had 3 half chances in the next few minutes but his shots were high, wide and saved. Jonathan was booked in the 69th for a mistimed tackle. following a Sfakaera corner in the 71st Pano went down injured; a calf problem. He went off for treatment.. IN the 74th Lee again had a harsh decision against him; this time he got a caution for dissent; in reality he was lucky not to be sent off but maybe the referee didn't understand what he said in English !!! FInally in the 80th Sfakera brought on a substitute (9 minutes after Pano went off.....why the delay?). A couple of successive corners for Sfakera were cleared. A 3rd corner was inswung by Martinos and headed away almost off the goal line; the floow up shot from nearly 40 metres was wide. A 2nd substitution was made as ALex hobbled off. In the 85th Aggeos was out on the touchline on the left; his high cross was taken by the wind and the goalkeeper did well to tip it over for a corner; the ball palyed out to Jonathan but his shot was high over. A Sfakera corner in the 89th was punched clear bu the goalkeeper; Jonathan headed it back into the box but it was cleared. ANother corner 2 minutes into added time was overhit and went for a goal kick.
FT 1-0 defeat for Sfakera. They really deserved something from this game but you have to take your chances. Sfakera do not have a goalscorer who can do this and the players they have just don't seem able to take the chances they create. So Sfakera stay 12th (the 2 teams below haven't played any games) and the gap is widening to the teams above!!!! Next week they are at home to a team near the top...……...having said that apart from the top team the others up there are teams Sfakera competed with and beat last season!!!!!

Ηρακλής Σφακερών-ΑΟ Κανονιού 0-5
There is no report as I didn't make the game. My fixture list had the game as being played on Saturday so I went to Nymphes only to find it wasn't taking place. I continued my walk to the waterfall and then onto Episkepsi to visit friends. I already had plans in place for the Sunday afternoon when the game was actually played so was unable to attend. It was a very windy afternoon but would have stayed dry during the match. The winning team are 2nd in the league. Sfakera remain 12th.

Yesterday Sfakera were away to Potomos at Kontokoli; a day of sunny intervals with a light wind. I wasn't at the game which Sfakera lost 1-0. I understand that Sfakera had two really good chances to score but failed to do so.

Yesterday on a cloudy day with some sunny intervals and a fair to middling Westerly wind Sfakera made the short trip to Avliotes to play league leaders Peroulades. By all accounts they put up a good fight as the scoreline 2-1 reflects. SO Peroulades remain top with 31 points (7 clear before todays games) while Sfakera remain 12th with just 4 points.

Yesterday Safkera had a 3-0 walk over win against one of the two sides who haven't been able to put out teams this season. We remain 12th (bottom of the playing teams) 4 points adrift of the team above us!!!
