On Saturday a 3:15 ko against the new Kassioppi side, AOK PAE Kerkyra, a youth team for Corfu FC. A few changes with a bit more experience in the team on a chilly but sunny afternoon. The visitors got off to a flying start with a goal in the 1st minute from a 30 metre freekick. I can only assume the goalkeeper expected a chip for onrunning players to try head as he never moved as the shot went in to his right hand side. Kassioppi were well on top, good possession, fast counters but often offside. Sfakera had a free kick themselves in the 6th minutes, headed on but the goalkeeper reacted quickest to gather. The visitors scored a 2nd in the 13th minute when a deep cross found an unmarked player at the back post who scored. Sfakera were fortunate to reduce the arrears on the 18th minute when after a quick break the ball was loose in the box and Rizzo reacted to poke home, as much to his surprise as everyone elses. Almost immediately Sfakera lost the ball, Kassioppi broke and the centre forward through 1 on 1 scored a 3rd. There were a couple bad offside decisions against Sfakera and the first of a few Yellow cards for dissent came in the 20th minute, soon followed by another in the 22nd. Sfakera had a half chance but the shot was blocked for a corner, Kassioppi shots went wide but in the 35th minute they scored a 4th when the forward rounded the keeper to roll in his shot. HT 1-4
the 2nd half got off to a quick start when Sfakera scored inside 2 minutes, the ball partially cleared following a cross was blasted back into the goal by Pano. Again sfakera conceded almost immediately with a counter the scorer looking to be offside. This was to set the tone for the rest of the half, the linesman who constantly flagged Sfakera offside was very reluctant to flag Kassioppi offside even if by several yards. However in the next 10 minutes Sfakera had 5 good chances to score following crosses or free kicks. Unfortunately for them every chance was wide of the post between 1 yard and 4 yards. In the 73rd minutes Kassioppi scored a 6th following a quick counter attack. the 7th 2 minutes later was unbelievable. A ball payed through the middle 2 players almost 5 metres offside, the linesman does not flag, nor does he run along hi line following play - he just stays rooted to the spot some 8 metres from the half way line!!!! Play continues and as the approach the goalkeeper the ball is played across to the other attacker, who was in front of the ball so again offside - the linesman still where he was and the referee only in the centre circle. They give the goal 7-2, Sfakera players quite rightly lost their cool and the linesman took a lot of abuse; the referee didn't caution anyone so he must have agreed but why didn't he blow for offside as it was so obvious. The rest of the game was messy, full of arguing, fouling and confrontations all as a result of clearly biased officiating that totally ruined the afternoon for all.
FT 2-7

last Saturday 24th Sfakera played high flying team from Marathia in front of 26 people. An afternoon of sunny intervals and a chill light wind. The first half was a fairly even contest but the challenges were extremely physical; Sfakera had a more experienced team out. Sfakera didn't have a chance until the 14th minute, the initial shot blocked the next well saved. the visitors had a shot straight at the goalkeeper, Sfakera one well wide. The visitors then had a shot punched away by the goalkeeper and the follow up deflected for a corner. Shortly after they broke quickly and a great recovering tackle by Jonathan saved the situation. Shorty after he headed a deep corner when he should have been told to leave it and Ale had to make a fine block tackle to prevent a shot. In the 33rd minute a lobbed ball forward was chased by Eri, the defender didn't get enough on his header and Eri was able to poke the ball round the goalkeeper to give Sfakera the lead. Next minute the visitors should have equalised but the shot went wide. In the 39th minute following a firm challenge Alex fell awkwardly landing with hand under body and his face in the pitch; lengthy treatment needed he had a grazed face and a very bad hand injury (was still strapped and causing pain when I saw him on Tuesday - but no broken bones). again the visitors should have scored in the 43rd minute but the strikers touch just too strong and the goalkeeper bravely gathered at his feet. As half time approached Sfakera again lobbed the ball into the box, it fell loose and at the feet on young Paniotis who smartly fired in to give Sfakera a surprise 2-0 lead at Half Time.
In the 48th minute the visitors shouted for a penalty but the referee wasn't interested. In the 51st the visitors pulled a goal back, a long ball into the box caused confusion and nobody was able to clear leaving the striker with an easy chance to score. This fired the visitors up and the started to dominate the game, nearly equalising the next minute. Sfakera had 2 break aways that could have lead to goals, the first fired over, the 2nd better chance also over when well placed to score. In the 62nd the visitors have a header just wide from a corner, 2 minutes later a good through ball gave them a great chance but the shot hit the bar. Sfakera tried to break, Eri fouled, referee ignore and the visitors play ball into the box where it was rifled home at the back post, 2-2. The game was starting to slip away from Sfakera and it was lost in the next 5 minutes; in the 66th the visitors break away, the player was fouled and the referee gave a 2nd yellow card to the Sfakera defender midfielder so they were down to 10 men. From the free kick the visitors scored to take the lead and in the 71st Sfakera got caught with too many players forward trying for an equaliser; lost possession and the striker ran through from the half way line to make it 4-2. The rest of the game was even but the number of fouls increased, the visitors milking some by laying as if injured but really timewasting. Frustration set in and the physicality increased as did the number of yellow cards. Sfakera had a few half chances the best of which was miss headed by Eri. In the 89th minute a visiting player injured himself trying to fly kick the ball on the wing in midfield, totally missed the ball and fell badly. The last chance in the game fell to Sfakera but the shat was saved.
Full Time 2-4.

Ηρακλής Σφακερών-Θύελλα 1-0 yesterdays game was an early ko at Nymphes……...fixture list says 11:30 but it ko at 11:05! Very cloudy with a light wind early but cleared slowly to give some sunny intervals, was mild but felt chilly as wind rolled down the cliff behind the ground. the visitors were mainly a younger team but fitter and more organised; Sfakera meanwhile had a few players who looked like they had not shaken off a late Saturday night out!!!!
there was some surface water along the stand touchline but t didn't affect the game in any way. An early corner to Sfakera and Jonathan just failed to connect at the back post. Play was even and messy, players not controlling ball, loose passes and little was created. In the 13th Sfakera broke but the cross into the box wasn't controlled and the chance went missing. in the 22nd the visitors had a free kick just outside the left corner of the penalty area but it was fired over. Sfakera put in a deep free kick in the 24th, there was a scramble in the box but the ball was cleared and the visitors broke through but the shot was straight at Nikos in goal. Two minutes later a thrown near the corner flag to Sfakera, into box and a cross to near post that the goalkeeper tipped for a corner which was cleared. in the 33rd and 34th minutes the visitors had two free kicks into the box; the first only half cleared but the volleyed shot was over the bar; the second was cleared outside the box but a long shot came in going well wide of the goal. In the 40th minute Sfakera attacked, Eri was running towards the box with the ball. He was fouled just outside the box but the ball ran to Rizzo who slotted it into the bottom corner of the goal. HT 1-0.
each side made a substitution before the 2nd half began. In the 49th minute the ball was out wide right and fell to Nikos (worked at Alexandros last summer) who fired a long cross shot which bounced off the top of the bar for a goalkick. in the 54th a Sfakera corner, it went over everyone and out for a throw on the far side. The visitors had a corner in the 57th following a deflected shot but it was well cleared. A great chance fell Sfakera's way in the 61st when Rizzo picked up a bad pass by the visitors out wide, his cross found Eri in front of goal just 5 metres out but his shot went wide when it looked easier to score! Two minutes later another long range shot from Sfakera was punched away by the goalkeeper. The visitors pushed forward in the 69th minute and Nikos had to dive to save a long range shot heading towards his right hand corner of the goal. From the resulting corner the visitors fired over. Several substitutions were made in the next 10 minutes and little happened; Eri shot wide for Sfakera and Nikos again dived well to save another long shot from the visitors. In the 84th the visitors had a corner, headed out by Jonathan and cleared upfield by Eri. The visitors put in a deep cross in the 89th minute which was cleared at the back post. Added time was scrappy and there were yellow cards shown to players of both teams. Sfakera held on for the 4 minutes added to win.
Sfakera are now 8th in league with 12 points, same as the team the defeated. Paleo lead the league on 27 points.

This morning Sfakera played away to Paleo in an 11am ko at Skripero. A misunderstanding over pick up times meant I missed my lift to the game against the league leaders. The result was 3-1 to Paleo.

Yesterday at Nymphes; Sfakera won 5-1 against Spartilla (they from just south of Benitses in the hills) in the last game of the year to remain 8th in the league. Due to other commitments I was unable to attend on a lovely sunny afternoon but I reliably informed that it was their best performance of the season.

on Saturday at Nymphes, at 3pm, Sfakera played against Potamos. It was a fine afternoon with a swirling light wind and sunny intervals but the clouds won out and the last half hour was played in a rain shower, heavy for a while as well. An experienced team started with two younger players on the wings with Lee up front. Alex remained on the bench.
the game started brightly and inside the 1st minute Sfakera had a half chance that was cleared for a corner which was headed clear. Potamos also wished to get forward down the flanks and in the 6th minute a ball into the box was punched out by Nikos; the follow up shot was well wide. Shortly afgter a freekick from wide right was fired just over the bar. Sfakeras next chance was a speculative shot from 35 metres that sailed over the bar. In the 10th minute Sfakera broke down the right wing and the cross was headed out for a corner. A superb corner by Pano found an onrushing player (either Jonathan or Yiannis) whose powerful header flew just wide when in a good position to score. Sfakera were on top now and in the 12th minute, following a throw in, Lee was able to turn his marker and get in a shot which hit the side netting. The next minute Sfakera again down the wing and get a cross low into the box; the defence failed to clear and Eri stole in to round the keeper and slide the ball into the open goal.....1-0 Sfakera. Straight from the kick off, Sfakera got the ball back and a long ball found both Lee and Eri bearing down on the goalkeeper; the keeper just got their first to gather the ball and Potamos broke quickly, getting the ball into the penalty area where a defensive mix up by Sfakera presented a great chance but the alert Nikos made a reflex save and the ball was cleared. The game settled down a bit and the next chance fell to Sfakera in the 22nd minute; again a cross into the box and Panos shot was deflected for a corner; the corner was half cleared but Sfakeras shot was straight at the goalkeeper. In the 29th minute Sfakera send a long ball deep into the visitors penalty area the ball moving in the wind; the defender failed to get a clean header and Lee very quickly got the ball turned and scored to make it 2-0. Potaqmos tried to rally and in the 31st minute fired a shot wide. In the 33rd again Sfakera played a good pass to the right wing, the resulting cross into the box was cleared for a corner that was also cleared; shortly after a nice break by Sfakera and an attempted 1-2 between Lee and Pano resulted in a corner which was again cleared. In the 39th minute Potamos were given a freekick in a central position 25 metres from goal; Nikos was able to catch the shot with ease. In the 41st following a cleared corner the ball was put back into the box where Eri had a great chance superbly saved by the goalkeeper...…..however he was flagged offside. The half finished 2-0 to Sfakera.
Both teams made a substitution at half time. Lee had a hamstring twinge so young Nikos came on up front. Before even a minute had passed Potamos sent is a cross, the striker controlled the ball, turned and scored. 2-1. The next action sore Sfakera win a freekick 25 metres from goal just right of centre. The visitors goalkeeper was a shorty stocky guy not your usual 6 footer. Costas noting this put a superb freekick into the top corner for a 3-1 lead......it has to be said here that many a taller goalie would have failed to save such was the accuracy of the freekick. In the 53rd minute Sfakera fire a shot over and two minutes later a cross into the box by Potamos evaded everyone going out for a goalkick. IN the 57th a shot by Potamos was saved by Nikos with his feet, but he recovered quickly to save the follow up shot. Just after the rains began Potamos received a Yellow Card for dissent; the resulting 30 metre freekick by Sfakera was straight at the goalkeeper. In the 64th minute the ball was with Pano on the left wing; he cleaverly lobbed his marker and Eri ran onto the ball, beat a defender and rifled in a goal through the keepers legs, 4-1. Shortly after following a corner Afakera had another chance but a missed header resulted in a goalkick; then anther shot was deflected for a corner which the goalkeeper managed to punch clear. In the 72nd there was a brilliant chance for Sfakera when a free kick from wide right found unmarked Yiannis just 5 metres out in front of goal; somehow he headed over resulting in some lively banter from non playing Sfakera players in the stands (Rizzo, Stathis, Nikos). Sfakera then replaced Costas with Nikos and while the team was re shaping Potamos had a lively spell with 3 successive corners; the 3rd resulting in a header just wide. Further shots by the visitors were either saved or wide of the goal. In the 77th Sfakera broke and a shot by Eri was well saved. In the 78th minute Dionisis came on as sub to the cheers from his team mates in the stands. Potamos continued to attack and in the 79th a shot was well saved, conceding a corner which an attacker missed at the back post and the ball net out for a goal kick. In the 81st Potamos put a free kick into the box; partly cleared it fell to a midfielder just outside the box and he put his shot into the top corner giving Nikos no chance....4-2. In the 82nd Jonathan was shown a Yellow Card; the free kick into the box was missed in the centre; the Potamos had a shot saved for a corner; the corner resulted in a header well saved for another corner. At this time Sfakera were a bit disorganised and one player came over to the touchline to argue with a spectator.....while the game was going on behind him. It was all Potamos now; 85th minute a header saved by Nikos; 88th minute a 24 metre free kick shot over the bar; the 90th minute a shot over. In the 92nd minute a free kick out wide left sailed over Nikos and dipped into the far corner 4-3 with time almost up.
Sfakera had a free kick 32 metres out in the 93rd minute but it went over the bar. Then with the visitors pushing forward the ball broke and Nikos found Dionisis is space on the right just outside the box......the ball sat up nicely and Dionisis hit the sweetest of a half volley that whistled past the flatfooted goalkeeper and with one bounce settled in the far corner of the net. The by now 29 spectators made a cheer so loud you would have thought there were a hundred present; Dionisis saluted the non players cheers with a raised pointed finger as his team mates mobbed him to celebrate his 1st goal for Sfakera. The referee then blew for FT whilst the celebrations continued. It was well deserved moment for Dionisis; he is usually on the bench sometimes not playing, others for just a handful of minutes. Occasionally he has missed a chance when looking likely to score but he never gives up......I am told he is always at training and trains hard and he is always there and ready to play. Today he got his reward and the cheers were well deserved as it was a great goal for his 1st for the team. 19th January will forever be known as DIONISIS DAY in the annuals of Sfakera football history; just a shame nobody videod the moment for posterity.
Everyone went home very happy, forgetting the rain, following the 5-3 victory. A very entertaining match; several goals of great quality that would grace any match at any level and Dionisis's moment the climax to it all. This will live forever in the memory of all those present.

Yesterday the game at Nymphes had a delayed kick off; the visitors Vasilialitika clearly forgot it was 3pm and didn't start arriving until nearly then so we kicked off at 3:30. There was some hazy sunshine in the first half, lots of cloud but a very blustery and gusting wind that moved the ball about especially in the air. Several changes from the last game; on the whole a younger squad with Alex again one of the 7 substitutes. A crowd that never got above 22 were in attendance.
As early as the 1st minute Sfakera put the ball high into the box, the goalkeeper fumble in the wind and Pano got his boot in but the ball went over the bar. Sfakera had a few corners in the next 10 minutes but each was cleared by the defence. The visitors had there first chance in the 10th minute when a good cross was put in but the resulting header was well wide of the goal. In the 16th the visitors had afree kick, central 24 metres from goal but shot over (we were to see the same with most free kicks as the wind clearly didn't help). In the 21st a visiting player went to ground unchallenged yelping; seems he turned his ankle and after treatment clearly couldn't carry on so was substituted. The in the 26th Sfakera had to make an injury substitution and Alex came on; shortly after the referee spoke to the Sfakera bench after some comments re a dodgy decision against Sfakera right in front of the bench. The visitors had a chance in the 28th from a deep free kick but the header was easily saved by Nikos. In the 36th the visiting goalkeeper and a defender collide going for a swirling cross but luckily for them the ball went for a corner which was cleared. In the 40th Sfakera won the bll in their own half, but a great through ball split the defence but the wind took it away before Eri could reach it, goal kick. In the 43rd, visitors mis control ball and it goes out near half way for a Sfakera throw; quickly Pano throws to Nikos up the wing, he runs into the edge of the box, rides a tackle and shoots high into the top far corner; 1-0. In added time the visitors send a deep through ball but Nikos was quick out his box to head it away. Half Time 1-0.
In the 46th minute Sfakera had a free kick 26 metres out to the left of the box but Eri's shot was well over.Shortly after another quick throw to Nikos who turned and shot but it was blocked. 48th a cross to back post was headed back across goal but the visiting goalkeeper caught the ball. Then a deep Sfakera free kick was caught under pressure by the goalie; the referee deemed he was fouled. In the 50th minute the referee stopped the game and cautioned a visiting player for dissent; the free kick was some 40 metres from goal in a central position.
