It certainly sounds like you and Jan are having an eventful journey back to roda. Mighty jealous of all the sights you must be seeing. Safe journey back to Roda, hope to see you in September

La Boqueria market in Barcelona is reckoned to be the best in Europe and our love of good food made it the very first stop of our visit. Jan had been before, but it still blew us both away with the sheer variety, freshness and low cost of the enormous range of products on offer. We even found ‘Ariadni’s Greek Symposium’ selling Greek-ish goodies with a twist, alongside gorgeous churros. The there were all kinds of nuts & chillis, huge boxes of saffron and ‘London Finest’ curry powder (well at least we are represented!). One of our great discoveries are ‘calçots’ (said ‘calso’), a local speciality which is a large, sweet spring onion barbequed until it’s black on the outside and delicious on the inside. As for goat, Kelly, I can tell you that it is delicious and we hope to be back to Roda in time to order some for Easter. This kid (cabrito) in the Ramblas market seems expensive, but it is worth it and people are buying it as a regular thing.

European WiFi continues to exert its lack of co-operation, so no more pictures yet. We've spent a cold, wet but pleasant Easter weekend in Florence and we'll be back in Roda on Thursday - just in time for Easter!

Finally we have a reliable internet connection and, belatedly, we can post some pics of our long journey back to Roda.
As it is Easter here, and food is very much on everyone’s mind today, we’ll stay in the market in Barcelona. The range of light meals in Spain, Italy & Greece, is a long way from what is cheaply available in the UK … be it mezes here, pintxos in the Basque country, or pinchos in Cataluña, the variety of food and the imagination of its creators are simply outstanding. It is a style of eating that suits the Mediterranean climate, and we love it.
Our first surprise was razor clams from Ireland, looking as fresh as the day they were collected. The deep-fried prawn & octopus pinchos looked delightful, but there are only so many things you can eat in any one day. The Iberico hams, carved on the spot, were only surpassed by one of our great discoveries, Sobrassada – a soft spreading salami from Majorca. The range of sweets & vegetables were stunning and the ready-cooked dishes looked as though they lived up to their names. All in all, regardless of its other famous attractions, I would visit Barcelona just to go to the market – about ten years would allow you to try everything on offer –once!

Sorry steve for the late reply! I do hope to be able to try goat one day, maybe September could be the ample opportunity. Do some of the restaurants in roda/Corfu do a dish using the meat?
Regard Kelly xx

Sadly, Kelly, no local restaurant that I know offers goat on their menu as no one asks for it. It is readily available in butchers’ shops, but we seem to have a bigger problem with goat than with lamb, and that I cannot understand.

Oh well not to worry, there is still plenty other foods to sample. My mam has suggested we try a restaurant that you have mentioned previously called o'arabas (?) does this restaurant have a similar menu to, say, roda park or Nikos family restaurant .

I like O Arabas, Kelly, but it’s not competing with places like Niko’s or Roda Park. There are some Greek dishes available, but the main focus is the menu of the day. Typically, it will be salad & chips with whatever meat is being barbequed at the time. This can be chicken, lamb, suckling pig even, and the quality is excellent. The setting is very atmospheric, but don’t expect to eat much before 8:30 as the meat won’t be ready.

Good to know this Steve, we can decide between the 4 of us to give it a go. We are always keen to try new places.

More pics of Barcelona, our main reason for visiting Spain en route to Roda. I’m still confused by the statue of Columbus as he seems to be pointing to Majorca rather than Michigan – are we sure he discovered America? Sun, or Shade, which side of the bullring do you want to sit in? Not far from the Plaza Catalunya, and the Ramblas, is the Basilica Santa Maria del Pi, with its Black Madonna – something we came across again later in our trip. Looking back up the Ramblas from the statue of Columbus, we were not far from this impressive pair of doors, created by one of my personal heroes, Antoni Gaudi – but more of him later.
