If you've ever been to Corfu, then you know Spiros ... at least one of the tens of thousands that there are on the island! All of them are named after St Spiridon, Keeper of the City, whose relics were brought to the island in 1453 and can still be seen on a number of occasions through the year, tomorrow being one of them. To celebrate the event, the Patriarch of the Orthodox Church of Greece is here in Corfu at the moment, to take place in tomorrow's celebrations. It's a good time to wish all the Spiro's you know 'xronia polla' as tomorrow is their name day and a national holiday.

Spiro, Spiros, Spyro & Spyros are all the diminutive names (nicknames if you like) of Spiridon, Σπυριδων, or Spyridoula if it’s a female, kaz. It originates from the Greek word for a basket (spiridion) which is what the Saint was brought over to Corfu in.
