I didn't realise that rabbit or 'underground mutton' was such a sensitive issue in Portland, even though my father was Dorset through and through. Indeed my maiden name is Dorset for hundreds of years.. I will remember next time I am on Portland not to mention that dreaded word of 'underground mutton'

Hi Jan.
I too lived on Portland for many years during and after my Naval career. As for the matter of the Rabbits on Portland. Stories told, is that the island was overun with them, borrowing in to the many quarries. At one time this caused a massive cave in, and many quarry miners were killed or maimed. Since these times, the word has not been used on the island. I do believe that Bunnies can be said, but not sure. This story can be seen and read in the Portland Musuem up on Tophill.
Incidentally, I lived in Reforne, just off the Easton Square. Whilst in the Navy, I lived at Haylands.
