Panagyri at St Stephanos near Roda 1st and 2nd August 2014
Steve and I went to this panagyri yesterday evening, a first for both of us. This festival is held in the olive grove behind Roda Garden Village, just opposite the quarry as you leave Roda for Acharavi. The setting was very pretty with lights strung from the olive trees in the grove shining on the hundreds of tables and chairs laid out in the natural amphitheatre where the band and small dance floor were. There must have been about 1000 people there, or so it seemed, and very few tourists were spotted. There were at least a dozen lambs slowly turning on their spits. Hundreds of souvlaki grilled to perfection on the charcoal bbq, dipped in salamoura (lemon, oil and oregano) and served with slice of bread. The sellers of grilled corn on the cob were doing a brisk trade .Simple Greek salads were also available at the bar, which was doing a roaring trade in beer, soft drinks and retsina. There were stalls selling small animals and birds, another selling beautiful handmade basket ware, a clothing stall, as well several selling loukamades galore. For the thrill seekers there was a Wall of Death attraction with some very brave young men posturing on their bikes to get a paying audience inside. The children were well catered for with candyfloss, and the usual toys and balloons. The group of four musicians and a man and lady singers entertained everyone for over three hours non- stop, and not a Zorba to be heard. The dance floor was filled with every age group from 8 to 80, with an odd babe in arms being given an early lesson. It was so good to see teenagers in their modern fashionable outfits dancing the night away to the traditional tunes, all of them new to us. We reluctantly left them still going strong at midnight as we walked the short distance to home.
Hope you enjoy my very short shaky video
