It was one of the busiest nights I've ever seen in Roda, last night, as the village came alive for its mid-summer festival ... the queue for loukoumades was endless, at least five full lambs were roasted on the spit, and the sweetcorn seller grilled his last cob well before the dancing was over. There can only be a small number of panagyris and it's a shame that more visitors don't get the chance to join in the festivities.

It did seem very busy and we were kept entertained as our seats were opposite the man chopping the lamb up. To say he was doing it with gusto was an understatement - we were so impressed we had our picture taken with him afterwards! I think having the festival near to the beach as opposed to the waste ground by Top Gear is a great move as it just seemed to have more verve. Even the occasional power cut never dampened spirits.

We were sitting outside in the Afroditi restaurant having a lovely meal on our last night after 16 wonderful days. The band was the same as the one at the much larger local festival we went to the week before near Velonades. A tremendous way to end a tremendous holiday! Tony

We must have been sitting halfway between mapleoak and Tony, right by the man with the sweetcorn ... and they were so good. I hadn't realised that those little wooden, spikey, handle thingies that you can buy to eat sweetcorn, are actually a direct copy of the real thing. The plant provides them in nature, but our supermarkets cut them off and then sell us a utensil to eat them with!
