Many people are now choosing to have a local car left at the airport for when they arrive. Although the so-called 'cheap' shuttle transfers have become very popular with more travelling independently, they do usually take some time to get you to your destination ... a difficult option if you are tired or have children. The use of a local hire car is a great alternative, especially if you are planning to hire one anyway, but the best car for seeing the island may not be the best one for a transfer from the airport. Group A cars are popular, but you cannot get four people and four suitcases into one easily or safely. Always choose the right car for your needs or ask for advice.

You added another post on here re soft/open top jeep hire? Which sent me into a spiral of research as that is precisely what we have booked! Does the fact it has disappeared mean that they are reliable to hire (dependent upon company, insurance etc etc)??

That must be a worry! I am not as organized as you though unfortunately, I might see about hiring a car for a few days when we are there

Thanks Jacks....still a bit of a worry then. And not organised Gremlindog just making sure we get the most out of our first time back to Corfu for 4 years! Car hire versus taxi....never went with car hire before so this will be a first

It may yet be a case of us just chilling this time and possibly going back next year and being more adventurous!

Hi twistybird - I am advised by two local companies (who don't have jeeps) that the law changed a year or so ago. Whether the government were concerned about accidents in open-topped vehicles, or not, I can't be sure. It seems that these vehicles are no longer available to them and they both say, independently, that most of these jeeps are now a bit old. Having said that, there are a few newer ones around so, I'm afraid that it's up to you to challenge your hire company and receive assurances that satisfy you both. Your safety must come first.

I dread to ask the question....we are hiring through corfucars4hire who advertise as a company local to sidari/roda/acharavi....we shall indeed be asking some further questions of them, but do you know of the company? Have read both good and bad reviews

I think these cars are organised by the Travel Spot Agency who do have a shop in Roda and who used to have a shop in Sidari also. The original owner was Ericos, of Ericos Travel, but I don't see his coaches around these days. His son Phillipos now seems to run the agency, assisted by English lady, Ceri, and a couple of others. I don't know if the cars are theirs, or sublet from someone else as it is a firm that keeps itself very much to itself. I think they organise a lot of visitors from Romania and maybe Bulgaria, and I too hear mixed reports.
Sorry not to be more helpful.
