Hi everyone, having viewed the latest photos of the new Bars in Roda I noticed that they all seem to have ashtrays inside, does this mean that smoking is allowed inside as well as out? I don't know if the smoking ban applies to Greece and was hoping that someone could clarify this for me. Thank you, Michael and Pauline.

Please don't quote me on this but I was talking to Alex Crusoes last year and I think he said that it all depends on the square mitres of the premises. Last year there was smoking in all that we visited.
I think michaelandpauline's post will generate quite a lot of debate but in my opinion and that's all it is so many pubs in the UK have suffered immensely because of the total ban even down to electronic cigarettes

Officially there is a smoking ban in all public places here in Greece, a couple of restaurants and perhaps one bar in the village do not put ashtrays on their inside tables but in one of the restaurants they will give you one if you ask for it. When the ban came in a few years ago Oscar's tried an inside/outside smoking policy, it lasted all of 30 minutes as everyone was sat at the outside tables & the inside where they were paying for an entertainer was empty. The ban may be enforced one day but this is Corfu, where it's live & let live and everyone seems a lot happier with this attitude. pete.

I have been told that there may be more effort this year to enforce the smoking laws. Time will tell ...

If I recall correctly, at the outset of the proposed smoking issues, was there not a measurement on the property which landlords could you use. I think it was something like, if 70 sqm and under smoking could take place inside, but if over 70 sqm, the property had to be split into to two, smoking outside, and not inside. I have tried to search for this, but nothing found as yet.

I recall a conversation on this subject, about 18 months ago, with the then manager at the 'Odysseus' (now 'Petrino's Steki').
It was explained to me that "officially" the Non-Smoking area was within the fabric of the original building; whereas Smoking was permitted within any extension/annexe etc.
Given that over the years, and the success of Roda as an holiday destination/resort, the vast majority of premises have been extended or converted in one way or another - which accounts for how the vast majority of bars, tavernas restaurants etc. are able to permit Smoking.
Rgds, Chris
