Well we are getting excited about August - our 11 year old has said she wants to learn some greek prior to going away (which is always a good sign as it doesnt hurt to make an effort)
Just thinking about day one and where would be the closest place to eat that day as chances are we will still be tired after arriving late at night on the 4th or more likely early hours of the fifth
Also if there is a shop close by where we can buy essential supplies - strangely enough i do mean coffee water milk etc rather than mythos!
Any information greatly appreciated

Hi Gremlimdog, you are lucky in that directly opposite the Kosmas (well almost) is a small supermarket operated by Spiros and his wife which sells all the essentials including fruit and veg and beer! Further down towards the crossroads is another supermarket, Taxis, (5 to 10 mins walk) but also very friendly and opposite it is a paper shop that does UK papers and a small selection of necessities. The first restaurant you come to is an Italian Pixida (Compass), 50 yards further on, which has a good reputation. If you turn left towards the sea the next one is Drossia on RHS of the road (150 yards approx.), very good for grilled food and Greek specialities run by the very friendly Adonis. The next day you must wander into the village and check out the large number of restaurants, bars, and snack bars we have. If you have any further questions don't hesitate to ask on this forum, you will get all the help and advice you need. If you are very late go down into the village, ie turn left at the cross roads and keep straight on, you will find a grill room, take way sit in diner that does Greek kebabs and gyros pittas, also chicken and pork chops. They open till 3/4 in the morning so you should get something. The supermarkets do stay open very late in the high season as well, there is a supermarket almost opposite the grill room that could still be open till 2 am. Also if your daughter can manage a few words of Greek it will go down so well, also learn the alphabet and the odd double letters eg mp together mean b. A simple tourist Greek book will help.

It is so good that she is keen to learn more Greek. All the restaurant/ bar/ shop staff speak English to some degree, but they do appreciate someone trying to talk to them in Greek. Do not be offended if they reply in English as they too are trying to improve! Hope we see you at one of our get togethers (FGTs) every Wednesday. Watch the forum for dates and places.we already have a phrase book and she is going to be trying to learn from there! we went to kos in 2008 and she could say a few basic things but she now wants to learn more!

I am looking forward to it.
The day we were due to fly home from kos in 2008 our local shopkeeper gave our daughter a small gift and i explained that it was probably because she had made an effort by saying a few words/phrases unlike a lot of the visitors there

We are back to Roda also in August but we are staying at the Melinda apts which is just along the roda from the Kosmas however our son and his girlfriend are coming also but they are staying at the Kosmas so you will probably meet up with them. There is a small shop next to the apts which sells most of the items that you require at a reasonable price.
