Our party consisted of 11, including myself and my son Jack on our 11th visit to Roda and 9 friends on their 1st visit to Roda. We flew with Thomas Cook and arrived on Monday 25th June staying for 2 weeks at the Angelina Apartments opposite Theo’s. The flight was on time and we landed at 1.30pm.
We booked a private minibus transfer with a company called SUNTRANSFERS and our driver was waiting for us at Corfu airport. The minibus was a 12 seater Mercedes with Aircon and our driver loaded our cases and was excellent. The transfer took just under 1 hour and cost 210 euros return (approx £17 each return). I cannot recommend these highly enough.
The rooms at Angelina are very clean and bright and we had aircon included in our very reasonable price. On the Thursday of our 1st week we were joined by 4 other friends (relatives) of Jami who works at Theos. These were only in Roda for 5 days and stayed at the Silver Beach. On Friday 2 more of our party arrived, also staying at the Angelina.
In no particular order (as I did have quite a lot to drink during the 2 weeks), I will share some of our activities and views.
Overall, the 2 weeks were absolutely brilliant and everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. All vowing to return as soon as possible.
The weather was hot, hot, hot as those in Roda will know, I believe getting up to the high 30’s/low 40’s on most days.
Around the village it wasn’t very busy during the day/evening, but was certainly getting busier in the second week. I know that Theo is pretty well full for the next few months and there were definitely more families with children in the second week.
Great food was had in for the most part, but there were a few disappointments as well.
Nikos Family Restaurant – Superb food and service as usual. Recommend the following…..Mussels starter, Lamb in Vine leaves main, Lamb Exohiko, Gioulblasi (sic), Seafood spaghetti plus many more.
Newport – Superb food. Recommend the fish dishes, superb sofrito, seafood carbonara, haloumi starter, plus many more.
Drossia – Superb food and service. Very big portions. The mixed grill is a real challenge as is the beautiful gammon and liver dishes.
Petrino Steki (formerly Odysseus) – ate there once and absolutely no complaints.
Thalassea – Good food and service as usual. Recommend the Greek Platter for 2
Roda Park – Very good as usual, but we all agreed that the Nikos family tavern just pipped it. Costas is great as usual and will still always eat there at least once.
Roxannes – very good food and lovely location.
Our group were disappointed with our meals at both the Dolphin and particularly Pangalos. Maybe it was just bad luck, but it wasn’t the first time for me that I have been slightly disappointed in these two.
Also ate at Theo’s (very good) and at Nino’s on the Beach (also very good)
Some of our group tried the Mexican and said that they had very good steaks.
I also must mention the snacks and food on offer at the Brandy shop, particularly the pizzas and the home cut chips cooked in olive oil (possibly the best I’ve ever had). The welcome from Olga and Miltos is also outstanding.
Some of our group also ate at the Pumphouse in Acharavi one night and were very impressed.
For those unaware, in most restaurants starters ranged from 3 euros to 6 euros and main meals meals started at about 7 euros going up to about 15 euros for fillet steak or slightly more for platters for 2 and the more expensive fish dishes.
Another huge bonus was the Corfu Beer. Green label pilsner lager, Red label real ale and black label bitter. Well worth a try and prices ranged from 3.50 (Brandy Shop) to 4.40 (Skouna). Pilsner also available on draught in some restaurants at 2.70 (much less gassy than Mythos and a pleasant alternative).
On one night we saw a great 3 piece band in Big Bens. The Lead guitarist was absolutely brilliant. Their renditions of Comfortably Numb- Pink Floyd, Hotel California-The Eagles, Sweet Home Alabama- Lynyrd Skynyrd, Whiskey in the Jar-Thin Lizzy in particular were show stoppers. The guitar solos made the hair on your neck stand up. Yiannis as usual was brilliant.
We won the quiz in Crusoes at our first attempt on a tiebreaker (answer was Vietnam War) and came third on our second attempt, due to half of the team leaving because it was taking so long. I know it is a slow quiz but a 20 minute gap between 2 questions saw quite a few become disillusioned and walk out!
Slightly disappointed to see the changes to the Golden Sands and though it spoilt what was a beautiful bar at the far end of the beach. Also the Irish lady at Alexandros (formerly Smileys) does become a bit irritating accosting you every night with the latest deals.
Went to the opening night of the new nightclub (Stage) up across the crossroads and danced far too much for a 47 year old, much to the embarrassment of my 18 year old son.
The beach was lovely and generally clean and well kept. A credit to the resort.
The greek night at Theo’s was excellent with dancing by the pool. A funny moment came when the dancer Costas from the Pegasus set his trouser leg on fire, much to the amusement of Theo and his dance companions. He wasn’t hurt at all and only his pride dented even though he continued to dance.
All old friends were visited and were well. Theo’s staff are excellent as usual (Jami, Jade, Lydia, Steffanos, Sasha and Dimitris) not forgetting Andreas the dancing Bulgarian.
There was a minor incident at the beach party after the Volleyball when a couple of Algerians I believe were caught trying to lift some mobile phones. They were quickly stopped by Theo and Yiannis from the supermarket next to Nemo’s and a few others and sent packing, licking their wounds as they went.
The youngsters among our group had many late nights/early mornings in the Drunken Sailor/Pirates bar and had a great time. ;D
There’s loads more to tell, but in summary a great 2 weeks in my favourite holiday destination. 10 more converts to Roda’s charms and another crop of future visitors.
I’m sorry I didn’t get to meet up with anyone formally, but I was busy acting as tour guide to our rather large group. I also spent too much time in Theo's swim up pool bar and at the Brandy shop drinking.
Happy holidays to everyone still to visit and a huge amount of jealousy to those who are lucky enough to live in Roda.
