Well they say time flies and it certainly does in Roda!.
My wife Deirdre and myself have just returned from two weeks staying in the Coral Hotel where we stayed from 21/05-04/06/12.
So here is my report on how we found things in the village this summer.
The first weeks weather was very unsettled with clouds, some sun,and a very large thunderstorm on the Sunday which caused the river to burst it banks in a dramatic fashion at the bridge just past Makis Apartments and fair amount of trees and other debris to be washed ashore from the sea.
The second week the weather was so much better with bright sunshine, light winds and high temperatures making the beach come alive with sunbeds and tourists.
Roda village itself was very quite indeed until the end of May.
From then onwards we saw a fairly large daily increase in the number of vistors wandering about the tavernas/shops etc and the bars seemed to be busier as well.
As i said we were staying in the Coral Hotel just on the outskirts of the village and had no problem whatsoever with the Hotel. which was spotlessly clean throughout, served good food, and, reasonably priced drinks.
I attended the FGT at the Harbour Bar the first week when DaveLinda and Muffy also appeared and it was good to put faces to the forum names.
The second FGt was at Pirates when only Steve and myself attended so we had time for a nice long chat on all things Roda and life in general.
Roda Bars:
All were open when we were there and we enjoyed a drink or two in most of them!
Roda Restaurants:
Again all were open apart from Pangolas which finally opened on the 1st of June and we made a visit on the 2nd June.
As they had only opened for the season the menu was very limited but my wife enjoyed a wonderful Seafood Platter whilst i enjoyed a Veal Limonata - both cooked to perfection with a wonderful sunset thrown in free of charge.
Had a few meals in Niko's Family Restuarant ( to my shame this is the first year we had gone there) but were still treated as old friends and made very welcome each time - try the Lamb Exohiko it is superb.
Made several visits to eat in our favourite restuarant Roda Park and am happy to say nothing has changed - still same day service with superb food in a happy atmosphere.
Yiannis started back on our second week and yes he is still as forgetful as ever regarding who ordered what etc!
Costas and Voula made us feel as if we had never been away and on our last night presented us with a bottle of their own Olive Oil to take home.
Petrinos Steki (which was the old Odysseus site) is now in full operation and i can honestly say if they continue to produce the same level of quality food and service we enjoyed on our visits they will be full every night in the peak summer months.
Apart from the A la Carte menu they have two three course set meal deal boards - one is International food the other purely Greek food- each is 9.80 Euros and you can even mix and match between the two offer boards if you want to.
A free Greek pudding/drink is also given with your bill and they have the best home made village wine i have tasted for a long time-i especially enjoyed the dry red.
Roxannes also have A La Carte and a daily deal set menu board ( two courses) at 8.90 Euros and again a good deal and good food.
Skouna - well what can i say excellent coffee, great food, nice cocktails and again a lovely view.
Opa still running as a restaurant during the day serving snacks also a full menu then as Five Roses after 10pm each night - both parts were very quite whilst we were there - such a shame for such a nice place.
Harbour Bar - Local Beer 1.90 Euro's a pint - Zorba's i think - tasted good anyway!
Mythos in most bars 2.30-2.50 Euros a pint.
Frappe 2.00 - 2.50 Euros.
Soft Drinks - (What's that?!) - around 2 Euros per glass most places.
Corfoit Ginger Beer - the only place i could find it was in the GP Family Supermarket on the main road next to Nemo's - 1.20 Euroes for a small bottle and very tasty too!
Sadly no Estrella - still closed no sign of a new tenant yet.
Maggie's - again sadly closed and totally empty now - what a shame- if only i had the money!.
The small grill room next to Mistral is still as good as ever - on our first night we only wanted a snack and each had a Gyros Chicken Pita stuffed with meat,tomato,onion.chips,tzatziki.
This combined with two beers brought the final bill to just under 10 Euros! - what a bargain - give it a try and eat with the local taxi drivers!
There is a new sit in Grill Room in the middle of the main street which is now open and also the Take Away Slouvlaki shop at the crossroads is almost ready to open by the looks of it.
Excursions:
We did a few trips Via Rena at NSK ,Paleokastritsa/Bella Vista,Old Perithia "Ghost Village" (highly recommended),and the Two Island Cruise to Mouse Island and Vidos Island.
All were excellent value for money an i will give a seperate report on each with pictures very soon.
We also did lots of walking about, meeting old friends in the village bars /shops/restaurants,and isn't it nice to be remembered wherever you go in Roda Village - there are not many places you can say that about.
Anyway i hope this report has been of interest to you and if anyone has any specific questions please ask or pm me while it is still fresh in my memory and i will be happy to reply to you.
All in all a brilliant holiday to our favourite village and we are already planning our next trip.
To all of you who still have to visit Roda this year - Have a great time - we certainly did!
Regards
David
