As the old saying goes - 'Money isn't everything - there's credit cards!' Whereas in many European countries, people deal with hard times by going into debt, it seems that Greeks do not necessarily follow suit. For the third year running, the number of credit cards in Greece has reduced in favour of debit cards and cash, bringing the total number of credit cards in use down by 30% of what it was three years ago.

Sensible way to manage your personal finances - removes the (easy) temptation to get too deep in debt.

I think so, Chris, and the popluation is being very responsible. Winter sales only started in mid-January and they have been poorly supported. Even the very modest expenditure on Christmas, by UK standards at least, resulted in coffee shops being empty until more funds are available. I have noticed this particular aspect in previous years too - 'you can't spend what you haven't got!' This is especially true as people are having to spend much more on heating this year - all a matter of priorities.
