The following news issued at 1800hrs yesterday ... ____________________________________________________________________
Taxi drivers continue the strikes
The president of the Federation of taxi Drivers has asked for the strike of all taxis to continue, underlining that on Saturday there will be a re-evaluation of the situation according to the meetings the taxi drivers are going to have with officials the following days. According to sources, during the meeting there were several proposals for the continuation of the strikes but also for their calling off, but finally after two hours of talks, the decision was made for the strike to continue until Saturday.
On the same day, the board of all taxi driver committees will adjourn and assess the situation in full. “We want a specific and final answer from the Ministry by Saturday” says the President Mr.Lymperopoulos.
The president also informed the board members of the meetings he had with the General Secretary of PASOK Mr.Kachrimakis and the Municipal Head of Attica Mr.Sgouros, as well as the many fruitless meetings with Minister of Transport Mr.Ragousis - whilst criticising him for his firm position.
The Ministry has not responded yet.
Regional taxi drivers and owners are not as decisive and aggressive as the ones in Athens. Both taxi owners of Rhodes and Kos islands have decided to put a stop to their strikes. ____________________________________________________________________

I heard about Rhodes, Chris - let's hope the locals will follow suit.
I believe also that almost 8000 taxi drivers now have cases against them for obstruction.

My information from the horse's mouth, Chris, is that today's meeting may result in the taxis running again tonight - or Saturday at the latest. The issues are not resolved, but people are hurting and there may be a truce - at least for the time being.

I only posted a copy of the news flash, when I saw it!
I really hope your "horse" is right Steve.
This situation (although I fully understand the taxi drivers' concerns) will not though do any good for the local tourism industry - nor the overall current disasterous Greek economic situation.

I hope so!
Good friends going on Monday & they'll have a year old with them. This should take away some of the worry for them - I hope!

Dave & Linda did their good deed for the year when a couple arrived this week on the green bus, dropped off outside Afroditi and asked the way to Roda Beach - with their suitcases!
Dave not only showed them, he took them - dragging their suitcases along the beach pathway and across the sand. Better than the hill though!

A one month moratorium has been agreed by the taxi drivers. They were working again in Roda this morning.

Steve, that's great news - although I worry about the fact that it's only a one month suspension. What will happen then, I ask myself?
Heres a copy of full news report on the issue . . . _________________________________________________________________
The following news issued at 17:30hrs (EET) today ...
On the road again, for taxi drivers
The taxi owners strike has been suspended, after a decision taken during the three hours long meeting of the Panhellenic Federation of Taxis.
As it became known after the end of the mobilizations of the industry, taxis will once more circulate in Greek roads.
The decision to suspend the strike until September 5th was voted with 13 votes for and 6 against.
IN practice, this means that the SATA Chairman, Thymios Liberopoulos’ recommendation, was passed, after the meeting he held on Thursday with ten of the 13 country prefects and Athens Prefect Yiannis Sgouros’ “fire preventing” intervention.
Worthy of reminding is that the prefects pledged that they will sign no new authorizations while the bill of the Ministry of Infrastructure is filed in Parliament, which will in turn provide for the liberalization of the taxi profession, as stated by the government.
Prefects also pledged that they will be guarantors of the dialogue beginning in the end of August with the ministry.
The declaration of Vice-president of the Panhellenic Federation of Taxis, Mr. Skentzos, that just one single individual asked the Attica prefecture for 2000 taxi licenses has caused a major shock.
“We are continuing with the dialogue and we hope that by September 5th, we will have the Minister’s proposals”, stated Mr. Liberopoulos, who thanked society for standing by the taxi owners struggle, the political world and the prefects who “for the first time took part in the consultation on a serious social issue”.
It is noted that immediately after the meeting, the chairman of the Federation was strongly booed and jeered by colleagues who disagree with the ending of the strike. ____________________________________________________________________
