Although Corfu was just about the only place in the country not to fall to Ottoman rule, tomorrow's Independence Day will be celebrated with much enthusiasm. This year, it is 190 years since the War for Independence began and in all that time, the flag of Greece has not changed.
The white cross in the upper left hand corner ,covering one quarter of the flag, signifies the important role of the Greek Orthodox Church in the formation of the Hellenic Nation. The nine blue and white alternating stripes signify the sea and the relentless waves of the Aegean, each one representing a letter of the Greek word for freedom, 'Eleftheria.'

Like most celebrations in Greece, children play a leading role supported by adults and Independence day is a case in point. What better way of ensuring that this important day is understood and celebrated for years to come.
