Ah Bev, yes OPA - we like it there too - my favourite is the Skartotseta (? spelling). All this talk about food is making me hungry and its only 9am! Roll on next July/August when we can go to all our favourite places all over again!
regards, Kath.

we never actually made it to the dolphin, saw the menu thought it looked nice, but then found one of the staff waaaay to pushy (not talking pushy like how lisa at smileys use to be, talking pushy as in arrogant pushy). we now have our favourites in roda - smileys, newport, and rod apark, which we like to rotate between....we may give opa a try this year too.

New Port got off to a shaky start this year and did not seem to pick up until July. Of course, there were less customers to be had but, for some reason, those who were here chose to take their business elsewhere. I have my ideas why this happened, and so may you. We love New Port - that was my first port of call last year for my seafood bolognaise which I had been waiting for ever since I left Roda in Sep 2008!Mind it was a costly night in the end....The electric went and we were paying on card, had no cash on us as first night in resort, so we ended up passing time drinking a second carafe of wine...course as with greek wines one glass leads to another, and well....we finally saw our beds at about 2am in the morning!

if it true that newport will not reopen next year then we have a problem.we have eaten their at least 8 nights per holiday over the last 10 years and jo is all ready in panic mode trying to sort out next years eating habits I will miss this place too if it closes, it was the first restaurant I had ever tried in Roda, was looking forward to returning this year and testing some more of their seafood dishes....

IMHO, some of the restaurants/tavernas have good days and bad days. Some people like them, others don't.
In the last 12 years of coming to Roda, I have probably ate in most of them, with the exception of the 'Chinese Restaurant'. Personally I wouldn't dream of eating at a 'Chinese' or an 'Indian' while in Greece.
My own favourites are:-
Panorama - Possibly my favourite Odysseus - Good Food and service Drossia - Very good meat, but little veg or choice OPA - Good food and service Nikos Family taverna - Good food and service Maggies - Obviously for good English Food Roda Park - Good Food (not brilliant though) and good atmosphere
Others: -
Dolphin - Ok but wouldn't rush back Newport - Fairly good but not in my favourites Smileys - Ok, nice setting upstairs Compass - Pretty good but not a favourite Pangalos (Kind Hearted Plaice) - Ok but not great
Chinese - Would never go for a 'chinese' while in Greece personally Mexican - Ate their twice over the years. Very disappointed both times
I would add that some of the food cooked and served around the apartments (particularly Theo's) is of very good quality and value. Ninos on the beach also do excellent food (a particular favourite is their greek burgers in pitta bread with tzatziki mmmmmm)
Also some great food/snacks to be had in many of the other bars out and about and loads in Acharavi. Golden Sands do some lovely dishes as does one on the main road in Acharavi. Can't remember it's name but has a water feature as you go in and the most impressive spotless toilets.
I personally have never been blatantly overcharged at any bar or restaurant in all my years coming to Roda, so therefore count myself lucky.
I have on many occasions however, seen British holidaymakers in Roda be rude, act arrogant and display disgusting manners to the locals. Saying please or thank you doesn't take much.

Great overview, Tony, and I do agree with some of your comments. We've all got our favourites and mine will be different than yours. As an administrator, I often decline to comment when someone's favourite restaurant does not suit me at all, and it would be good for others to review a broad spectrum of our restaurants rather than just a couple of the most popular. I know that many visitors 'do the rounds' of their favourites, so why not put a bit of flesh on the bones and, like Tony, make a brief comment about each.
So much, of course, depends on your normal eating habits, with some wanting nothing but pork chops & steaks, while others can't find enough time to sample all those Greek favourites. For me, visiting another country is an exciting, once-a-year opportunity to try new dishes, so my favourites would always be Greek. That's not to say I don't enjoy an occasional Fish & Chip meal at Maggies, or a homemade pizza at Estrella. The beauty of food in the village is that, whatever the cuisine of your choice, it is usually prepared from fresh ingredients. Tell us what you think.
Steve.

Hi linnie - had a long talk to Stamatis today (Sam, the waiter) - even he doesn't know for sure, but nobody is expecting Adonis back in 2011. Everything can change and it's all speculation at the moment.

I will bite the bullet!!! My favourite places to eat in order are: Newport - great service, great food Odysseus - great food, giant portions and Nikos is a very attentive waiter Crusoes - brilliant daytime snack range Estrella - good food, not just pizza Roda Park - never had a bad meal and they say themselves the service is dodgy lol Pangalos (Kind Hearted Place) - I recommend the chicken souvlaki (delicious) Compass - quite nice food although has a tendency to be too tomatoey sauces at times Mistral - quite good food, if you want quick and simple cooking I'm sorry to say I have yet to try OPA. I have never eaten at the Chinese either but now obviously it's Poseidon so not sure if and what food they will serve!! Sure I've forgotten places

I forgot Drosia!! I'm not a huge fan but I'm not a big meat eater which unfortunately is their speciality!! Also Dolphin I have never eaten there as I don't eat fish!! Pirates is also good for snack food, they did some good deals as well while the football was on last summer!! I'm quite difficult to feed but the great staff in Roda have always been very accommodating especially if there is something you can't eat, I have known coeliac's that take their own pasta to the restaurant to be able to enjoy some of the gorgeous Greek pasta dishes. In my experience ask the staff and it's usually possible

Hi Newtonus, given the consequences of getting it wrong you would be better asking at each restaurant, perhaps even finding the greek words so that you can explain properly to the owners, i know that some of them will prepare dishes to suit the individual customer. Hope this helps. pete.
