I can't debate this any further based on my opinion johnboy - only the small print in the contract will prove the point about tyres, wheels etc. You can go online to many Corfiot Car Hire companies and read their Terms & Conditions. You will see how they lead you to believe these things are included and then take them away again.
These are personal decisions of course, and everyone must balance value against quality and low prices against personal safety.

Of course, many people move to Corfu because they don't like what their own countries are becoming. It's what is commonly known as 'progress.' What is needed is a balance between what Corfu offers now and develops into, and similar critieria for our traditional home locations. Again, it's a matter of personal choice and everyone has the right to vote, with their hard-earned euros, to move elswhere. Interestingly, several ex-pats have moved away from Roda to other parts of Greece, only to return some time later. For me, it is quality of life and contentment that are the key criteria and one must ask where are they most likely to be found? There will always be compromises.

i havent been in roda for 12 years now, so would be very disappointed if it was all roast beef and yorkshire pudding and full english breakfasts everywhere. i holiday in greece most years, and the thing that brings me back to all parts of greece time and time again , is the food. i could rain for a fortnight for all i care, provided i can get a proper kleftiko, prawn saganaki, d**n i'm drooling now. anyway i think chris is out of the same mould as me, i always set out to find where the locals eat, be there a week on monday but wish it was before sunday, cos sunday is the day you can find out the best places to eat.
when church comes out where does everyone go.
well thats what i usually find.
a sure thing to keep me out of your restaraunt, is signs outside relating to , sunday roast, full english breakfast, real british sausages etc etc.
i dont understand people making the effort to travel so far and then not dine on local fayre, uno when in rome etc.
anyway i'll shut up. but if any taverna owners are reading this, have some octupus hanging up getting sundried outside your place and i'll come in. but if you are advertising british food as your "special" you wont get my custom.
was on the virtual street thingy and noticed one restaurants specials as stifado, kleftiko and prawns, i was salivating at those words chalked on a blackboard. mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

Jacks----would you move from your home because someone opened a bar next to you?The moral of my comments are revert back to what Roda used to be not Blackpool!!To say why do you stay is a comment that is not deserved by any means of imagination. I wasn't meaning to be rude. I just think if I disliked somewhere the way you seem to, I'd be off! Just my opinion.

Not very often I comment on subjects like ths but I think we have to remember that the season in roda and the whole corfu is only six months. In that six months they have to make enough money to see them through the whole year, maybe there is an extended family to look after as well. So I think as much as we have loved roda and greek food for the last 20 years other people do like their BRITISH FOOD not me but that is their choice and all the taverna owners must cater for them or go bust. The appartments we stay in have improved a lot in all those years in the last 3 or 4 years they have built 6 new appartments but they still only get a pittence from the tour company and hope to make it up on food and drinks from the people staying there. We have been to Turkey and Tunsia and could not fault either but we still love Roda and the people, thats why we and all our family keep going back as 8 of us will be doing again in september.

Hi Oldrottenhead, just my own humble opinion but this whole "Blackpool" nonsense is just that - nonsense, if you want to eat Greek food you could try eating at - Opa, Newport, Smileys, Kind Hearted Place, The Dolphin, Roxannes, The Afroditi, Odysseus, Thalasia, Drossia, Roda Park or Niko's Family Restaurant - They should keep you going for the first few nights till you get your bearings & not a yorkshire pudding in sight. You have to bear in mind that the businesses in the village are struggling to make ends meet in very difficult times & if one night per week some of them offer a sunday roast then good luck to them. We eat at as many of the greek places as we can but are not adverse to using Estrella, The Compass, La Madera or the famous Maggies. No one forces anyone to go into the so called "british" bars but they are the ones with the most customers in them so they must be doing something right - or have i got it wrong ? pete.

We were in privately owned apartments as we did our usual thing and went independent, and we always 'eat Greek' - I have no complaints about the choice of food and where to eat it, that's down to individual taste, but I know for a fact, having lived in Corfu for years before leaving in 2002, that a lot of the apartments are the same as they were when we first went over in 1978, and it's no longer acceptable for a lot of people. A Greek friend of ours told me on the 'phone the other day - and I quote - 'It was the English who made Corfu and it is the English who are destroying it'. I can't say I agree, but I sort of understood what he meant.

There is no less Greek food available this year in Roda than there was in 2009. Some traditional restaurants are offering 'English Breakfasts' now as they try to get a larger share of a smaller cake. These initiatives generally disappear after a few days as the owners realise that they don't attract enough business to justify the extra costs of staffing etc.
If I am correct, the last three restaurants to open were Golden Sand, Thalasea and Estrella - Golden Sand is unquestionably Greek, Thalasea is basically a Greek restaurant with a few international favourites and, whilst you could argue that Estrella is Italian, don't forget that we are only 60 km or so away from that country. Corfu has developed its unique qualities by being at the crossroads of eastern Europe and the citizens once asked Rome to rule the island when they became fed up of being invaded. In the case of Estrella, ask Litsa where many of her recipes come from and you will find that they are family recipes from her northern Greece roots, 50 km north of Thessaloniki.
As for truly British Bars, there are actually very few, and certainly less than there were three or four years ago. Incidentally, Stella's Bar is currently closed as Stella is back in hospital. I will try to find out today how she is.

There is some progress being made on improving apartments, but things move slowly. One hope is that the children of the people who were here in the 'golden years' might take up the initiative. To me, it seems logical that owners would be better to make five big apartments from ten small ones and fill them rather than see them decay. The winter climate here can be unforgiving and structures do deteriorate quickly if not occupied. With the trend to larger groups travelling together, it would be a simple matter to create larger apartments and give Roda another unique selling point. Pipitsa is proving the point and it needs others to follow.

We were spoilt (accommodation wise) as we stayed with Nikos at the Angelina (opposite Theodoros) which were spotlessly clean, had shower curtains and up to date kitchen equipment, air-con etc. We are now trying different accommodation and will continue to book independently from the TO in order that all of our money goes to the accommodation owner. But for us personally the ideal would sit somewhere between "basic" and the luxury that Pipitsa provides.
regards, Kath.

Shirl and I sad to hear Stella in hospital. We spent many happy hours sitting with her at Roundabout Bar and, stange though it may seem, much of the time in companionable quiet. Please send our kindest regards, Shirley and Johno.

Well my review did throw up a debate. I'm sorry Pete but your comment just confirmed my view of Roda turning into a cheapman's Blackpool. The English that mainly come are of the sort that want 1-2 weeks in the sun as long as they get the same entertainment as home. Yes the British Pubs were busy, we frequented the only bar that didn't have blaring music or entertainment and had a fabulous view. Roxannes. We found Golden Sands to be the only genuine Greek restaurant, and that is from Opa's biggest fan. I just got sick and tired of being served chips or rice with everything. If I have my way we will be returning in the Spring before the season starts and see Roda as a real Greek village.
