'Kathara Deftera', today is 'Clean Monday' and it is a public holiday in Greece which is celebrated with outdoor trips, the flying of kites and the consumption of fish. Eating meat, eggs and dairy products is traditionally forbidden to Christians throughout Lent, with fish being eaten only on major feast days, but shellfish is permitted. This has created the tradition of eating elaborate dishes based on seafood. The happy springtime atmosphere marks the beginning of the spring season and the date varies according to the date of Easter which this year is very early. Let's hope the weather holds up!

Another reason to get to Corfu out of season. The spread looks wonderful, and we hope all had a good time. Kathara Deftera.

Hi Laurence - the kites were actually outside of the Afrodite with Golden Sand in the far distance. Alex has been in Wales all winter so we won't know his plans until he digs himself out and returns to Roda.

You wouldn't believe how busy it is in Corfu on 'Clean Monday'. Just about everyone is out & about looking for a good place for lunch. We went with Pipitsa & company up to the Sunrise Taverna near Karousades and we almost had to park in Astrakeri - it was packed! On the table we had big beans, in tomato and as a salad, taramasolata, 'lagana' - the specially baked sesame bread, octopus, squid, cuttlefish, pork, crab salad, langoustines, pastitsio, grilled sausages, stuffed peppers, tzatziki, cod & chips, all sorts of salads and wine. When we had finished, we were then offered the menu!

We went back to Pipitsa's afterwards, kaz, for bakalvas that is especially imported from the mainland because it contains more butter!
