On the last evening of our holiday last year our daughter Kelly wanted to have a hennatattoo. She used to do that every holiday at the last day so it would last longer. But last year it went wrong. Her leg was red and full of blisters . I cleaned it of course to try and loose the henna. By accident I learned that more people had problems with their tattoo. So I looked for information on the internet and found out that the man who made the tattoo must have used Black Henna. That means he didn't use natural (redcoloured) henna , but chemical black henna ( which isn't henna at all but PPD ( parafenyleendiamine in Dutch), and this can give a severe allergic reaction. I wanted to share this with you because if you have had an allergic reaction once, you can never have a tattoo again, nor die your hair (black) , you can even have problems wearing blackdyed clothes. You can even have problems when you use some medicins, so it's very important that the doctors know that you are allergic to PPD.
So my message is : you CAN have a temporary tattoo but be sure it is real natural henna !!!!(red/brown coloured) and NOT black henna !!!

Maybe an extra word about hennatattoos, we never had problems with tattoos made by local people !!!!!! The last time Kelly had her tattoo made, was by a foreigner (wanting to earn money fast i am afraid )

I have heard so many stories of problems with Henna Tattoos, I refused any my children to have one. You can not tell how clean the equipment is. It is normally done on the street, and as pointed out, if the wrong type is used it is dangerous, very dangerous. Even the Red and Brown Henna are not 100%. My opinion, leave well alone.
I am proud of myself, 30 years in the Royal Navy, and not one tattoo on my body. For those who do not know, tattoos are a Sailors trade mark, or use to be.

You can't use ANY hairdye on your hair if you've had a henna tattoo. It tells you, even on the semi-permanent one that I use.

As far as I know REAL henna is safe, but you might want to read the article on wikipedia (not sure if it´s all true) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HennaThis is a photo I recently made of Kellys tattoo, it's only a white line but I hope the Roda sun will make it disappear !

Petra,
I have just read about black henna, the reactions that you get with it is very scary!! I have only ever had real henna tattoos done in the past and would never get a black one!! I will also be warning all of my friends to avoid them as well.

As Steve & Julie have already stated and i can confirm there is no one offering Henna tattoos in Roda this year and as such this isn't a problem. This post is now closed. pete.

Just to let you know that there is now someone along the sea-front offering henna tattoos.
So, be aware of the potential problems and make up your own mind.
Thinking about the risks, we still see so many people, adults and children getting sunburnt, even after years of warnings.
The damages from sunburn can become life-threatening in later life.
So, please think about the risks of both henna tattoos and sunburn and make sure that commonsense prevails!
